I've got three tattoos, all celtic bands/knotwork and all designed by myself except for the first one. I got my first tattoo back in the '90s, when everyone wanted tribal ones, and absolutely loved it. Shortly afterwards I started doodling my own designs. Most of these were done by hand without a ruler or a compass as I was using the back of the drilling log sheets we had in my job on a geotechnical drilling rig (no oil, lots of mud). I later started to use CorelDRAW to produce vector-based equivalents.
I'm hoping to start doodling some new designs soon. I will also be getting Adobe Illustrator so that I can produce some professional versions which I can then put up on here. I'm not looking to make money so if you see something you like then feel free to use it... the only condition is that you contact me first and send me a picture when you've had it done, deal?
The first design is going to be based upon my family crest, a white lion rampant on a black shield. I produced a template outline years back so will be photocopying that and then "filling it in" using alternate black-on-white and white-on-black bands. Which one I use for the lion and which for the shield is up in the air at the moment, it all depends upon the size so I'll wait until I have a first sketch before I decide.
I'll also be digitising my old hand-drawn sketches too, so expect to see some of those soon too!
